Jose Mourinho has challenged his Manchester United stars to use their dramatic League Cup final win against Southampton as a springboard to bigger prizes.
Mourinho lifted the first major trophy of his United reign on Sunday after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s late header clinched a 3-2 victory at Wembley.
The 54-year-old is the first United manager to win a major competition in his maiden season at Old Trafford and the 19th trophy of his glittering career made him only the third boss, after Alex Ferguson and Brian Clough, to enjoy four League Cup triumphs.
Now Mourinho wants his players to learn from the winning feeling as they chase FA Cup and Europa League titles this term, and ideally Premier League and Champions League glory next season.
Despite the landmark occasion Mourinho wore a stern expression during the trophy presentation.
But he insisted he was merely hiding his pride because he wanted his players to soak up the adulation.
The Swedish veteran, who also scored United’s opener with a fine free-kick, was written off by many when Mourinho signed him on a free transfer last year.
Yet he has defied the critics with 26 goals in all competitions, and Mourinho said he never doubted the forward.
Ibrahimovic’s future remains uncertain as his contract expires at the end of the season but, while Mourinho won’t plead with him, he expects the star to stay.

Written off by many when he joined United on a free transfer, Ibrahimovic has now scored 26 times this term after striking twice, including the 87th minute winner, to kill off Southampton.
Ibrahimovic’s goals allowed Mourinho to celebrate the 19th major prize of his glittering career.
The 54-year-old is the first United manager to win major silverware in his maiden season at Old Trafford.
He is also only the third manager ever to win the League Cup four times, after lifting the trophy three times with Chelsea.
Mourinho’s decision to sign Ibrahimovic has paid rich dividends and he was quick to salute the Swedish star, who also played for him at Inter Milan.

Super Eagles Coach Rohr, NFF Worried About Troost-Ekong Status In Gent

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr is worried about William Troost-Ekong’s lack of playing time at Belgian club Gent ahead of the African Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Cameroon respectively.
The former Tottenham Hotspur youth-teamer impressed the coaching staff of Gent upon his return from a loan spell at FK Haugesund, starting all the games during winter preparations, and helped goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic post a shutout in the two games he has started in the First Division A.
The Belgian media and Gent coach sang Troost-Ekong’s praises, but he has been dropped from the team over the last few games, which has led to some concerns within the Super Eagles coaching crew.
Ekong is one of the key prospects in the Super Eagles and is seen as the future of the team along with the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Alex Iwobi, Isaac Success and Wilfred Ndidi, hence the NFF are concerned that lack of consistency at such a young age may hamper the player’s development.
Rohr had reportedly advised the central defender to shun Belgium football and opt for a club playing at a higher level in order to improve as a full international.
The Nigeria coach even recommended him to a German Bundesliga club who were keen to sign the player, however, Ekong insisted in staying in Gent.
Troost-Ekong returned to Gent with a growing reputation, having starred for the Dream Team VI at the 2016 Olympic Games and helping them win the bronze medal.
On top of that, he was officially named to the Tippeligaen Team of the Season for 2016.

We do not regret having Mario with us’ – Nice president Rivere backs Balotelli

Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere insists the club have no regrets at having snapped up Mario Balotelli last summer.
With the path cleared for the Italian striker to leave Liverpool, the Ligue 1 side moved quickly to acquire an enigmatic talent and their faith in his ability was rewarded early on with seven goals in as many appearances.
He has, however, endured a dip in form since then, with only one more goal added to his tally in his last six appearances.
Those appearances have seen him collect more red cards than goals, with Balotelli having been dismissed three times in 2016-17.
Nice have, however, managed to remain in title contention throughout the 26-year-old’s slump and Rivere remains confident that the former Manchester City and AC Milan forward will rediscover his spark.
