The Cross River State Police Command has detained a police officer accused of assaulting a motorist at the Ikom Border Post in the state.
The command said the officer had been recalled to his base and was currently facing disciplinary proceedings in line with established police procedures.
The command disclosed this in a statement signed by its Police Public Relations Officer, Eitokpah Sunday , on Monday
According to the statement, the incident occurred on August 28, and involved allegations of assault and unprofessional conduct by the officer.
“The officer involved has been recalled to his base and is currently facing disciplinary proceedings in line with established police procedures,” the statement read.
The police said it would not tolerate unprofessional conduct or the abuse of members of the public by its personnel.
It added that appropriate action would be taken based on the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings.
The command further reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability and respect for human rights.
“The Command reiterates that unprofessional conduct and abuse of members of the public will not be tolerated,” it stated.
