The Cross River State Police Command has denied allegations that its officers were involved in the removal of street signposts in parts of Calabar, describing a viral social media video linking the force to the exercise as misleading.
The command said the individual seen in the video removing a street sign along Akai Effa Road, near Power Line in Calabar, was not a police officer but a staff member of Dernkal Global Resources Ltd, a consultant engaged by the Calabar Municipal Local Government Council to carry out the ongoing street naming and house numbering exercise.
In a statement issued on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eitokpah Sunday, the command explained that the enforcement exercise followed weeks of public sensitisation and notifications to residents through various media platforms before its commencement about a month ago.
According to the statement, police personnel deployed to the area were present only to provide security for the consultants carrying out the assignment and to ensure the maintenance of law and order, stressing that no officer participated in the removal of any street signpost.
The command urged members of the public to refrain from originating, sharing or amplifying false, misleading or unverified information capable of causing unnecessary public anxiety or eroding confidence in public institutions.
It further advised residents to verify information through official channels before circulating it, reaffirming the commitment of the Cross River State Police Command to professionalism, transparency and the protection of lives and property while supporting lawful government activities.
