Armed thugs has allegedly disrupted a campaign of the Peoples Democratic Party in the Calabar South area of Cross River State, with reports of gunfire during the incident.

The incident reportedly occurred around the African Club area of Calabar, where the PDP campaign was taking place.

It was gathered that the suspected thugs allegedly opened fire on the campaign, causing panic among party supporters and residents in the area.

Confirming the incident, the Cross River State Police Public Relations Officer, Eitokpah Sunday said the command was aware of reported incidents during political activities in Calabar South.

Akata, in a statement issued on Friday, said, “The Cross River State Police Command is aware of reported incidents during political activities in Calabar South today, 2nd October 2026.

“Police personnel have been deployed to the affected locations, and the situation is presently under control. The Command is verifying the circumstances surrounding the incidents, including reports of gunfire, injuries and damage to property.

“For public safety, residents are advised to remain calm, avoid affected areas where necessary, and refrain from circulating unverified information.

“Police presence and monitoring have been strengthened to maintain peace and public order.”
The police spokesperson did not state whether any arrests had been made in connection with the incident.

The command urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as investigations continue.
